I HATE exercising

I feel ya! I HATED exercise, like dreaded it, and had to think about my pending workout all day in order to get myself in the right mindset.

At that time I was running, outside and on a treadmill, about 3 times a week. I am NOT a runner, my body was not built for running, I loathe running and I’m super slow. Why did I run, you ask? Well, I knew (I thought I knew) at the time that running was the fastest way to burn calories and get lean. So, I dreaded it and hated every single second of my 30 minutes, but sucked it up and got it done.

When I made my New Year’s Resolution in January to focus on ME, this included finding more time to exercise. I was really trying to get to the gym but my full-time job, our active lifestyle with 2 small children in after school activities, and a husband that Coached a separate basketball team at the kids’ school and owns a consulting firm with demanding hours made it difficult. This time I was DETERMINED, at that point I knew I needed a new strategy, I needed to find something I could do in the comfort of my home.

I am now a true believer in finding your soul workout and that you can actually look forward to exercising. Before jumping in and just picking something, I started to really think about what I liked to do in my spare time, and going WAY BACK, what did I like doing when I was a kid and teen? I remembered that years ago I loved a Pilates class I took, I also took a couple of Modern Dance classes in college (I danced most of my life), neither of those actually felt like work or exercise, they were fun! Hmmmm, I wonder if I could find a workout that incorporated either of those instead of something I dreaded, like running and jumping?!?! DING DING DING!

This is when PiYo entered my world, it was a cross between modern dance, pilates and yoga. For the first time in YEARS I was looking forward to my 30 minutes a day, and gladly doing it 6 days a week! WHAT?!?! I mean, who wants to dread working out, how long do you think you’ll last before giving up? NOT COOL!

Here are a couple of questions you can ask yourself to get you going in the right direction:

  • What sport do I enjoy playing the most?

  • What were you doing the last you time you felt young and alive while exercising?

  • What physical activity did I like when I was younger? Biking, running, dancing, etc.

This is something I really love about Beachbody programs, they have something for every fitness level, workout type, workout length, and all totally within budget at just $99 for the entire year (that's under $9/mo). Here are a couple of our programs:

As for burning the most calories? As I mentioned above, I THOUGHT that running burned the most calories in the shortest amount of time. I was so WRONG! I have burned close to 400 calories in 30 minutes during a couple of my workouts, while maxing out at 250 running for 30 minutes and hated every second of it! I also didn’t realize that your body NEEDS strength training to burn fat into LEAN muscle. Running/cardio is great for your cardio vascular health (aka heart ), but what about the rest of your body? STRONG is the new SKINNY people!
